NDT tough – conversations with industry professionals: Jérémy Fuentes
September 21, 2023
As part of NDTtough, we are sharing messages from professionals in the non-destructive testing industry. AT ECNDT 2023, we had the chance to talk to Jérémy Fuentes, NDT Sales Manager France, Belgium & Eastern Europe at Carestream NDT.
NDTtough: 4 questions to Jérémy Fuentes
How did you get into NDT?
I wouldn’t say by chance, but almost. After my studies, I had to do three internships; the first was at a car manufacturer, the second for a company selling windows, and the third in non-destructive testing. The last internship was completely different, and NDT opened a new world for me. I discovered many interesting applications in aerospace, nuclear, defense and so much more, which was perfect for a curious guy like me.
What does NDTtough mean to you?
In my role as a product and sales manager, a challenge is to provide the right solution for each customer, mainly because their needs are often unique. I have to think creatively for each job and match needs with solutions.
It’s also what I like about this job, though, because delivering the solution is always a huge accomplishment and so rewarding.
Would you recommend the NDT Business to people seeking a career?
Yes, I would. It's an exciting business if you are interested in electronics and engineering; you get a view into many industries because non-destructive testing is used for many applications; things that people use and see daily have been tested, inspected, and undergone enormous ingenuity. To get to see and understand this that's pretty cool.
If you're curious, the NDT business could help to satisfy your curiosity or make you ask more questions!
What was your biggest challenge getting into NDT?
Learning to speak the language. When I was new in the industry, understanding the technical language of level 2 or 3 NDT technicians and figuring out their exact needs was hard. Even today, it can still be very challenging to meet with someone and understand their situation and challenges in a couple of hours - it is my main difficulty and also what keeps things interesting.

Every unplanned maintenance story begins the same way: a system running, a sudden stop, and a rush to respond. When the production line goes down, attention turns to the problem rather than the process. You fix what’s broken, restart the system, and move on, until it happens again. This pattern, called the reactive cycle, keeps companies stuck at the bottom of the performance curve. In the reactive circle, maintenance is driven by events rather than planning. Failures trigger actions, not insight. Engineers spend valuable hours troubleshooting instead of improving systems. And each loop, repair, restart, repeat, feels productive but leads nowhere. The more reactive you become, the less control you have over uptime, cost, and predictability.

Winter has a way of changing the world, revealing previously hidden details: textures in frost, layers in bare trees; quiet structures the rest of the year conceals. The microscope carries that same shift in perception, revealing that entire worlds exist in the smallest spaces, waiting for anyone patient enough to look closely.
